"I just don't know what to do about Mom and Dad.They don't seem to understand anything about me! All they do is argue, argue, argue!" Pete said to John, his best friend.

John said nothing, only listened, realizing his best friend, Pete, wasn't thru venting yet.

"I mean, they got married and had ME, didn't they? They must LOVE one another! But if they do, they have a funny way of showing it!"

John stared at Pete, looking soulfully, into his eyes.

Pete continued. "I hope Dad doesn't hit Mom when I'm not around. You don't think he does, do you?"

John knew it was a rhetorical question, just as he knew his friend didn't really believe his Dad would hit his Mom. He understood it was just easier for Pete to talk out his secret worries this way!

When John said nothing, Pete took it as agreement with his point of view, as always.

"I'm glad you don't think so either. It just HURTS me so bad to hear them argue.
I think they should spend more time talking about how they LOVE one another, and LESS time talking about how the other one disappoints them. I bet if they did THAT, they wouldn't hurt each other so badly!"

John quietly nodded his agreement.

"You know, you're the best friend a guy could have, John. You never criticize, and always listen. Thanks, buddy!" Pete said, hugging John.

Open displays of affection like that were enjoyable, but often embarrassing to John. He just looked at his friend, still concerned.

"I'm all right now, John! Thanks for listening. Hey, you wanna play ball?" Pete asked excitedly.

"Woof!" John replied, running after the boy.
